If you want to turn with me, we’re in Isaiah chapter 44, starting at verse 24. This is what the Lord says. Your Redeemer who formed you in the womb, I am the Lord who made all things, who alone stretches out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, who foils the signs of the false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, who carries out the words of his servants and who fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, it shall be inhabited by the towns of Judah. They shall be built end of their ruins. I will restore them, who says to the watery deep. Be dry and I will dry up your streams, who says of Cyrus. He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please. He will say of Jerusalem, let it be rebuilt and of the temple. Let its foundations be laid.

And so, over the last few hundred years, people have tried to discount that Isaiah actually said this.
But as commentators that have carefully studied the poetry of it have noted, Cyrus doesn’t come in as sort of like some random addition. His name doesn’t show up as sort of a footnote in the middle of the text that feels like something jarringly different. No, there’s this whole thing about idolatry, idolatry, not trusting in idols, trusting in the Lord. The Lord says he’s going to rescue his people, and then he names whom it is that he’s going to rescue them by. He’s at the high point of the poem, not the sort of thing that just gets added in randomly. And so it seems that Cyrus, people wouldn’t have known who he was, but he was there as the first people heard Isaiah’s prophecy.
But it’s shocking to the modern mind often to think that, yeah, God actually did foretell something. He didn’t just vaguely foretell. I’m going to rescue my people. He said, and here’s the person I’m going to rescue them with. That’s our modern skeptical mindset getting in the way of understanding how God works. And I think it’s important that we say, no, God actually is powerful enough that he can do that.
But if you were in the ancient world and you heard this, if you were an Israelite who heard this, the shock would be for a different reason, you didn’t doubt that God could foretell whom it is that would rescue the people. You would doubt that it would be a Gentile king who was Cyrus. He was the king of the empire who was holding God’s people captive. He was an idol worshiper. He didn’t hold on to the promise of the Lord or worship the Lord. How could he be the one?
And I imagine, because the name would have sounded foreign, that you have the first people hearing Isaiah’s prophecy. And they hear of this King Cyrus, this shepherd of God’s people, and they say, but Lord, that name doesn’t sound—it doesn’t sound Jewish. It doesn’t even sound like somehow you’re going to reconstitute our northern neighbors. It’s one of those people out there. Isaiah, did you misspeak here? Maybe you meant something else.
And I imagine as Isaiah is telling this, he says, no, no, this is exactly what the Lord says. Imagine the people trying to figure this out, as they’re living in exile. They’re not allowed—they’re a beautiful city, and they’re not allowed to rebuild the temple yet. And then they start to hear about this King rising up Cyrus, and they think, hmm, this is interesting. But it can’t be. We can see he’s still worshipping the false gods of his people. He’s not worshipping—he’s not worshipping the true Lord. How could he be the shepherd? How could he be the one who’s going to restore Jerusalem?
Maybe they even read this prophecy and say, and God’s just been condemning idolaters. How could God condemn idolaters in one breath, and in the next breath, say, by the way, the most powerful idolater that you’re going to be around at all is going to rescue you? How does this work? It doesn’t make any sense. Doesn’t serve it as an idolater? It doesn’t work. And not just an idolater, but a shepherd. In other words, imagery of David, and not just a shepherd.
But what does Isaiah say, and thus what does the Lord say in Isaiah 45, verse 1? The Lord says to his anointed. Well, you don’t have to study Hebrew to know what the word anointed is, because you’ve probably used it. It’s Mashiach, Messiah. We know who the Messiah is, right? But think about it for a moment. The same term, the same title given to Jesus is given to Cyrus here.
Now, it does help to back up just a bit and realize that the term anointed one, or Messiah, is applied to each of David’s descendants as well as they take the throne. They’re anointed, and therefore they’re the anointed one. And there’s a difference that becomes clear in the prophets of the anointed ones over time versus the anointed one, the ultimate anointed one. But at the same time, it’s not a light honor. It’s not like you run into the anointed ones all the time, right? Oh, here’s the anointed one in this particular building. No, there’s a anointed one, right? That’s why David, if he’s running from Saul and he knows he’s been promised the kingdom and yet Saul is pursuing him, David doesn’t say, “I’m going to just go kill Saul and get over with like all my friends tell me to do.” No, I’m not going to harm the Lord’s anointed, His Messiah.
So what does this tell us? Well, it gets right back to where we were last week, Jonah, as he looks at the people. Yeah, they’re wicked, they’re not faithful, they’re not following the Lord all the time, but they are the Lord’s people, they have the Lord’s city, they have the Lord’s temple, they have the infrastructure, the institution, the steeple. So it must be okay. He says, “No, by the way, I don’t really need any of that stuff to do what I’m going to do. I can do it however I want, because I’m actually in control. And if I want to take a pagan idolater king who doesn’t even know who I am and turn him to my purposes, I can do that. My plan, my power is bigger than my people.”
God works outside. Sometimes we even struggle with that today. There are debates in lots of theological circles on how much worldly knowledge we should be willing to acquire. And there’s a sense in which we should say we should be careful, right? We should put God first, we should put his truth first, his instruction first, but at the same time, when people have God’s gifts and they come up with wisdom, there’s actual genuine wisdom, right? I have no problem if someone, for example, describes how gravity works accurately, and that person isn’t a believer. I don’t say, “Well, you’re not a believer. You can’t possibly understand how gravity works.” No. I mean, if you know, you know, right? I mean, that’s great. It’d be even better if you knew Jesus and you actually understood the one who authored the thing you’re studying, but you can accurately tell me about it.
I think we kind of intuitively often pick that up. And here’s a reminder, God actually works through those things, right? He works through history. He works through people in spite of themselves. He works through truth that is obtained even when the people don’t know the author of truth. How many of the anointed ones, the people that actually were understood to be the anointed ones failed? Well, we know a lot of them, right? We can go and read the books of kings and then go over to Chronicles and read it again, and we can find out over and over how these kings were imperfect and often outright wicked. They didn’t serve God’s purposes. They had the title. They were sitting on the right throne. They marginally went and worshiped the Lord in the right temple, but they weren’t actually going in the direction of God’s purposes.
Sometimes God’s purposes then come out in unexpected places. I remember, I remember back when this first came out, Toy Story 2. Remember Toy Story 2? Great movie. The early Pixar movies were just, they’re all just fantastic, right? But I remember the original Toy Story, and it was spectacular because it was one of the first really fully computer animated films, and it wasn’t just a technical wonder. It was a really good story, and it had so much depth and emotion to it. It was beautiful. Then they come out with Toy Story 2, and they actually pulled off a sequel that was really good in itself.
Well, when Disney working with Pixar green lit that movie, initially it was one of those direct-to-home video kind of cheapy films that are often not very good. Maybe rightly, they knew that most sequels aren’t very good, and so Pixar is working on the next big cinematic film perhaps, but they were going to have Toy Story 2 as something they could make some money off of on those things we used to call VHS tapes or maybe early DVDs, they were going to do that, and somewhere along the line, the Disney executive saw what they were doing with Toy Story 2 and realized what was happening. It was actually a really good movie in its own right, and they said, “No, we don’t want this just to be a VHS tape, people forget. We want this to actually be a cinematic release,” and so suddenly they up the budget, and it becomes way more complex, and they’re trying to get done in time, and they’re racing, and one of the technical workers on the production went to clean up the servers where they were doing all the rendering of these files, and of course, even today, it’s a huge undertaking to render, create these huge computer animated films, but especially talking 25, 30 years ago, you’re talking about immense computing power, you have these big centralized systems doing that, and the person’s trying to clean it up, and he needs to delete some files, and he goes in the wrong directory and types a command that doesn’t ask any questions, it just starts eating up everything it hits, and he realizes he’s unleashed it on all the movie that’s been completed so far, and the majority of that movie was destroyed before he realized what was happening and stopped it. It was gone, and so then they’re trying to say, “Well, what do we do here?” Because they went to the backup, and they found out the backups hadn’t been working for the last month, did they cancel the film, did they just give up on it?
Well, it turned out one of the production directors happened to be on maternity leave, and when she did, she’d taken home a copy of the file so she could keep working remotely, and when they realized what had happened, she’d returned to work, but she drove home, wrapped her computer in bubble wrap, and drove back, and Toy Story 2 was saved.
Now, if you’d asked someone ahead of time, “Where should we go if something happens to these files?” They would have said, “Well, one, you shouldn’t type in commands like that. That won’t happen. No one will accidentally do that, right?” And if they do, you go to the backups that we have organized on these expensive machines, well, that didn’t work. Where did it come from? It came from an unexpected place, a home computer, presumably a powerful one for the time, but a home computer, that just so happened to have the work that they’d been doing on it.
They looked at a non-obvious place, and they saw the solution, and what Isaiah here is encouraging us to do is when we’re praying to our God, when we’re watching God work, be willing to look in the non-obvious places, the home laptops, and not just decentralized everything that seems like it’s so well organized. Where are our Cyrus’s? Where is God working through someone we wouldn’t expect, someone who doesn’t even know Him, some place that doesn’t seem like it’d be the place that God would show up? Because if we’re coming at it like God’s people usually do, we think that won’t happen, right? That person isn’t commissioned to do it. That person isn’t sanctified to do it. That place, it’s not the right place. And God says, “I do control everything, I can work wherever I want to work.” And here He’s telling His people that so they can actually embrace that and celebrate that and watch that rather than say, “Oh, it would never happen there.”
That person isn’t that valuable, that opportunity isn’t that valuable, God couldn’t do anything with that, kind of looking like if you go under your sofa and you find some of those now collector item pennies, you go in there and you find an old beat up penny. Maybe even worse, like you know the cup holders in your car, you sometimes throw a change in there and then it sits under the cups and it starts to corrode and it’s all gunky from soda and whatever else. You find that coin, maybe it’s even eaten up a little of the copper, right? It’s still obviously a penny but what value could this possibly be? Let’s say they find a huge new copper mine and they start mining copper and suddenly pennies aren’t actually worth more physically than they are what’s on the face. Well, regardless you wouldn’t despair because you know that whatever that coin’s worth on its stated face value is exactly what you can redeem it for because we can trust the treasury actually is going to back that up that’s it’s going to say it’s worth a penny or it’s worth a dime or it’s worth a dollar or it’s worth $10 or $100 and as long as it’s actually in existence it will be backed because it has that authority, the full faith and credit of the United States government.
I think how much better God’s credit is, how much better his faithfulness is and he makes each and every one of us including the people that don’t even know that he’s made them and when God says I’m going to use Cyrus we don’t have to say well but how could you Cyrus he’s an idolater he doesn’t actually understand what you’re doing Lord he couldn’t be used no if God says I’m giving Cyrus value he’s going to restore my people to their land guess what he’s going to restore God’s people to their land.
We need to understand that God really is in control not sort of in control not almost in control not in control as long as all the pieces are right and the mineral value is high enough that the metal is actually worth something no if God says that it’s there it’s there his promises are overwhelmingly sound he’ll never get a bad credit rating never give out too much money or go off the gold standard or devalue the currency or anything else God can’t because he’s always true one thing God won’t do is be untrue.
But if that is true and it is well for all this talk of Cyrus being used we can fall into the wrong impression and we need to understand the key that as God’s plan is much bigger and broader than we expect the God’s work is also more focused than we expect.
He goes on Isaiah 45 verse 2 I will go before you and will level the mountains I will break down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron I will give you the treasures of darkness riches stored in secret places so that you may know that I am the Lord the God of Israel who summons you by name for the sake of Jacob my servant of Israel my chosen I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor though you do not acknowledge me I am the Lord and there is no other apart from me there is no God I will strengthen you though you have not acknowledged me so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know that there is none beside me I am the Lord there is no other I form light and create darkness I bring prosperity and create disaster I the Lord do all these things.
God’s work is focused. Cyrus doesn’t know it yet but God’s working and it’s important to note here that God makes a deal out of that right it’s important that Cyrus understand. The context did he ever I don’t know if Cyrus at some point came to terms with this and truly understood I have no reason to think he actually did and God doesn’t say well that’s okay it doesn’t really matter if you if you think Marduk is God and you want to worship him if you if you think these other various gods of your ancestors or their God okay no problem you know they’re kind of yeah they can kind of do some stuff no he doesn’t say that he says I’m the only one that can do anything so what’s the point that the nations would know that’s going to restore his people in spite of the person holding them captive in spite of himself he’s going to actually work for a God he doesn’t know he’s going to accomplish something for the God he doesn’t know why so that people will know the God that he doesn’t know.
The intent God’s going to set the stage for God’s people to continue the northern kingdom gets wiped out by Assyria and is forgotten but the southern kingdom Judah the tribe of David with the line of David going to be continued it won’t be defeated won’t be like the northern kingdom why so that people will bow before the Lord so that people can testify to God’s goodness that yes Cyrus may not know now and he may never know but people will know when the God who’s so powerful that even the most mighty of pagan kings ends up bowing to God’s will what should people do in response and it happens.
There’s the incredible thing because Cyrus sends the people back the line of David continues maybe not with earthly power but the line of David continues and the thing promised happens. Philippians 2 verse 10 what happens in Jesus that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
Cyrus the Messiah the anointed one unwittingly sends the people back so that the anointed one can come into this world and because of that already we see the Lord’s name is proclaimed around the world yes not everyone yet knows him but way more know him than you could have ever imagined when Isaiah was prophesying here I mean whether you were Jew or Gentile you look at that and say how in the world even if you get Cyrus the great to send these people back to their land and they start up their little backwater temple and backwater palace and backwater walls and they’re in this little backwater place that doesn’t really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things and doesn’t even have the wealth that once did what’s that do to get the Lord’s name out well it does everything this guy’s going to work through that doesn’t need anything more he doesn’t need to switch lines they had line of David didn’t work I’ll just use the line of Cyrus now no he uses his anointed Cyrus to keep the promise he made and see it through.
The risk in seeing this universal plan those some people say well you know maybe as long as God’s in control of everything and he’s using pagans even maybe it doesn’t really matter if people actually know them they’re being used by them anyway it’s a profound misunderstanding of what God’s doing.
I know I’ve shared this before but one of the ways that we’ve tried to economize as a church is that if we need something for the church I keep a list often as a mental list sometimes it’s smart enough to write it down but a list of things we need and when we come to for example Black Friday is coming up I watch for sales for this stuff right and I find those deals and rather than buying it three or four weeks before I wait now nowadays I don’t need to wait quite as much right because Black Friday started already several weeks ago it’s a very long Friday but I have discovered there’s a danger in that that I think well you know it’s just starting Black Friday maybe maybe we need this part or we need this this item for the church but maybe I could wait a little longer and some other part of Black Friday will actually be a better deal in it this is just the beginning of their Black Friday sale so I can come back in a week and I can buy it sometimes that works but one thing I’ve learned at times is sometimes even though they’ve turned Black Friday into a multi-week event that particular deal isn’t a multi-week event and it sells out right away after a day or two or shorter and I miss out then I start looking again and think ah now I have now we’re gonna spend ten dollars more on this this thing really irks me I could have saved us some more money on that ah and it’s one of the confusing things there’s this broad thing called Black Friday now it’s very very broad it’s not obvious oh I need to buy it on the Friday after Thanksgiving no it could be end of October maybe could be the second week of December because we have the encore Black Friday sale on a Cyber Monday and so on is it that broad or is that breadth to emphasize smaller more focused things within it and the answer is oftentimes it’s still more focused if I want that particular thing what particular thing do we want we want to experience what we’re really made to be and to do right we want to experience salvation that we that this life isn’t the end and yes God’s working throughout all the world there’s Black Friday all over the place it’s a global phenomena you can’t find one place where God’s working and he’s not working elsewhere but he also says well all the other working it’s all pointing to this one deal it’s one place that I need you to look you need to look to the cross you need to know there’s a specific moment a specific thing that matters.
Wait isn’t that God’s plan is so big that it doesn’t really matter if people know him or not because he’s going to get his will accomplished anyway the point is God’s plan so big because his intent is to make more people God’s people not that God’s plans only in this little spot of God’s existing people and it’s this itty-bitty little plan no it’s a very big plan but it’s a very big plan because he intends to keep growing his people and have a very big people that’s our calling to help with that.
I wonder as Cyrus did fulfill this how many people in the people returning thought you know we need to make sure Cyrus actually understands how beautiful this is anyone ever try to share the gospel so to speak with Cyrus maybe maybe not not full gospel right it hadn’t happened yet but say you know you what the Lord’s doing for you I don’t know and genuinely one of the risks that we can run into is we continue to see God work in these big ways as to forget that sometimes the person that God’s using that doesn’t know him well that person’s ministering to us that person serving us through this big plan of God’s but as we watch that big plan in all of the God who’s so big he can do that we should be looking at that person saying and maybe part of the reason this is happening is that God wants me to help that person know him how do we do that how do we help people who still think those idols are providing protection even as they cook their food over the rest of the wood how do we help them understand know the wood itself the molecules in the wood the existence of fire that was all the creation of one God that God loves them yes God provides parts of his plan to them he doesn’t leave them out without any blessing or benefit but it’s because he loves them he wants them to actually know him and how when we do see those other parts of the plan do we remember that yes it’s a very big plan much bigger than we often think but there’s a focus point to it that we’re headed to over the next few weeks I’m going to keep challenging us how can we invite people to a Christmas faith tree and a Christmas Eve service or just any service during an event how can we be active agents in God’s hands and feet bringing people in not because we can save them but because God’s big plan is that we are his people proclaiming him inviting people helping people to know him how can we do that so that more people aren’t just used by God in his big plan his unstoppable plan more people then get the joy of actually knowing the God who’s using them as we come into the Christmas season we start Advent next week we’re celebrating the God who moved history we need to remember why he moved history moved history to move us to him that’s what this map has been about that’s what our continuing mission is about that we understand that and that we share that with others let’s pray that this week we can do that will you join me in prayer.
Father thank you for this evening and thank you for being the God who does move us to you that you have moved history that we can actually come before you we see wondrous things like a pagan king worshiping false gods who in spite of himself ends up being a part of the story towards the Messiah the one who would take our sins and triumph over death for us as we hold on to that truth and we look at that with wonder Lord would you help us to then think about how that big plan continues to work today and pray about how as part of that plan you would use us to help more people know you proclaim you with their lips and worship you with their knees that more would know you and experience the joy of you the love that you have that it wouldn’t just be being used but being sons and daughters of the living God we pray this in Jesus precious name amen.
